High winter water in the Cowichan River can be the best time to practice Swift Water Rescue techniques. Last February I was able to capture the Cowichan Search & Rescue team at the Skutz Falls Fish Ladders practicing their water rescues. Each member of the team, dressed in their survival suits, entered the fast moving river and had to swim back to shore unassisted. Swim with the current angled toward the shore. once comfortable in the water, safety lines were strung across the river to practice hooking on to. Everyone took a turn at hooking on to the safety line. Not an easy task as you are speeding along with the river. One by one each rescuer completes the task.
